Investigators believe that members of the Berkut riot police units were involved in the shooting of protesters in the final days of the Euromaidan protests, also called the Revolution of Dignity, on February 20, 2014, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) has said.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) has submitted to court three indictments against one of the commanders of the operational company and an officer of the “Berkut” Ukrainian special riot police force over the crackdown on Maidan activists on February 18.
In August 2014, the SBU had planned a large-scale special operation to detain 20 policemen from notorious special Berkut unit suspected in committing crimes during the Maidan protests in 2014, but someone had tipped them in advance and they escaped from the country, chief military prosecutor of Ukraine Anatoly Matios told a TV channel.
