On December 6, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On the Armed Forces of Ukraine", "On Defense of Ukraine", and on December 13, the "Concept of Defense and Construction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine", which defined the basic principles and directions for the development of the Ukrainian Army.
Ukraine inherited from the USSR one of the most powerful armies in Europe, equipped with nuclear weapons and relatively modern weapons and military equipment. But it's no secret that during more than 20 years of independence, the Ukrainian army was almost destroyed.
During decades there were massive reductions in personnel, some of the troops deserted from the service, not seeing in the army any prospect.
In addition to internal factors, external ones were added: all this time Ukraine had to overcome the violent pressure of Moscow, which strongly opposed the creation of capable Armed Forces in our country.
All these years, Moscow acted in different ways, depending on the domestic political situation in Ukraine and in Russia. Initially, there were diplomatic means (sometimes quite unacceptable), and then came to an open armed aggression. After the Revolution of Dignity and the beginning of hostilities in the east of our country, a new page of the history of the Ukrainian Armed Forces began.
Despite the total ruin in the army, corruption, treason, loss and insidiousness of the enemy, the Ukrainian military managed to defend the independence of the homeland, protect its people from the aggressor, and restore the defense capabilities of the Armed Forces.
