In the Soviet times, the professional holiday of television and radio broadcasting was celebrated on May 7. This date was set in 1945, during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the invention of the radio by Alexander Popov. This tradition was followed also after Ukraine gained independence.

In 1994, Ukrteleradiocompany proposed to the state leadership to make November 16 as a professional holiday for television and radio workers. On this very day, in 1924, the first broadcast of Ukrainian radio was released in Kharkiv. On November 11, 1994, on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the beginning of broadcasting in Ukraine, a decree was issued. Since then, November 16th is considered to be the day of electronic media workers in Ukraine.
