Moldovan parliament enacts transition to mixed electoral system

The Moldovan parliament has passed legislation on transition to a mixed electoral system at the final reading. The bill was supported by 74 out of the 101 parliamentarians from the ruling Democratic Party, the European People's Group and the pro-presidential Party of Socialists.

The parliamentarians from the factions of the opposition Party of Communists, the Liberal-Democratic and Liberal parties left the session hall in protest, pointing out that the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe had recommended not adopting the legislation in the absence of a political consensus. The parliament passed the version of the bill presented earlier by the commission on legal affairs and published on the parliament's website on Wednesday. The lawmakers did not discuss the bill and did not ask any questions. All non-parliamentarian parties and the parliamentary opposition categorically objected to adopting the bill on transition to a mixed electoral system at the second reading.
